My name is Julia Wood, and I am a recent graduate (class of 2014!) of the University of Mary Washington, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in both History and Geography.  Through both of these majors, I have grown as a researcher and writer by pursuing innovative ideas and exploring avenues I would not have thought possible without the guidance of the faculty members of both departments.  I have also received my certification in Geographic Information Systems, and have had extensive experience working and completing projects using programming and GIS software.  I have had several opportunities to combine this knowledge of GIS with my interests in history and geography, and look forward to pursuing a career in which I can use my skills as a cartographer to enhance my work in another field.

I am an avid reader, hiking enthusiast, and lover of all things old-fashioned, hence why learning about history is my passion.  I have been lucky enough to have had internship experience that has allowed me to apply my love for history and geography to my skills in the GIS field.  My work with Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont in Fredericksburg, VA and with the U. S. Geological Survey in Reston, VA have allowed me to both digitize data and create maps, and introduced me to a field that incorporates both GIS and my love of the past.  The combination of employment experiences, academic training, and personal character traits and skills that I possess make me a dedicated, qualified, and motivated individual for a variety of careers.

I am currently employed at SYNCADD Systems, Inc. in Alexandria, VA where I am a GIS Specialist working as a federal government contractor with the United States Army.  I am thrilled to be able to continue my experience in the GIS field and am honored to have found a position in my field so recently following graduation.  Here I will be able to follow my passion for helping the world around me and incorporate my love for maps with my passion for the military, although my allegiance lies with the Navy when it comes to football.
